Eco-Friendly Laptops: Why the Greenest One Is Already Built

Ask most people what going green costs, and they'll tell you: more. Solar panels cost more upfront than staying on the grid. An electric car usually costs more than its gas equivalent at the dealership. Swapping jet fuel for zero-carbon biofuels would cost 140% more. Bill Gates calls that gap the Green Premium in How to Avoid a Climate Disaster: the extra cost of choosing the clean option.

Laptops are the exception. The most eco-friendly laptop is one that's already been built, because most of a laptop's carbon footprint comes from making it, not using it. Production accounts for 71% of a new MacBook Air's lifetime emissions, and everyday use only 25%. A refurbished laptop skips that manufacturing step, so the greener choice is also the cheaper one.

Most of a Laptop's Carbon Footprint Is Created Before You Turn It On

It's tempting to think of a laptop's environmental impact as something that builds up gradually, a little electricity every time you charge it. That's not where most of the damage is done.

Building a laptop starts with mining: aluminum for the case, copper for the wiring, gold for the connectors, lithium and cobalt for the battery, plus rare earth elements for the display and chips. Each material is extracted, refined, shipped and assembled into components before final assembly begins, and every step burns energy.

Manufacturers' own lifecycle reports show how lopsided the split is:

• Apple's Product Environmental Report for the 15-inch MacBook Air with M4 (March 2025) puts its lifetime footprint at 155 kg CO2e. Production accounts for 71%, use for 25%, and transportation for 3%.
• Dell's carbon footprint study of the Latitude E7440 (2013), a business laptop, attributes 215 of its 276 kg CO2e, or 78%, to manufacturing.

So the most effective way to shrink a laptop's carbon footprint isn't using less power while you own it. It's skipping the manufacturing step entirely by buying a computer that's already built. A refurbished laptop absorbed its manufacturing emissions under its first owner. Buying one instead of a new unit avoids adding a second set of those emissions, and it keeps a working device out of a landfill.

For what happens to computers that don't get a second life, including the materials that end up in landfills, see our breakdown of how refurbished electronics help reduce e-waste.

The E-Waste Math Doesn't Favor "New," Either

The Global E-waste Monitor 2024 from the UN's ITU and UNITAR recorded 62 million metric tons of e-waste generated worldwide in 2022, a record and an 82% increase since 2010. It's on track to reach 82 million metric tons by 2030. Only 22.3% of the 2022 total was documented as properly collected and recycled.

That growth isn't driven by computers wearing out. Replacement cycles are getting shorter, software nudges people to upgrade long before a computer stops being useful, and retail defaults everyone toward buying new. Refurbished laptop deals work against that trend directly.

They keep a laptop that's already built, already shipped and still has years of useful life in circulation, instead of adding another new unit to a stream the UN says is growing five times faster than documented recycling.

New vs. Refurbished at a Glance

Buying new means paying for the manufacturing twice: once in dollars and once in carbon. Here's how the two compare for a business-class laptop.

None of this requires settling for a worse laptop. It requires knowing what "refurbished" and "Grade A" actually mean.

What Grade A Means at System Liquidation

Refurbished isn't the same as used. A used laptop is sold as-is, in whatever condition it happens to be in. A refurbished one is tested, repaired where needed, cleaned and graded before it's listed.

As we explain in our guide to refurbished computer grades, Grade A laptops are in excellent condition and closely resemble a new laptop in appearance and functionality. They're fully functional, may show minor cosmetic marks, and are thoroughly tested and repaired to meet the manufacturer's quality standards. Every Grade A unit is checked individually, not batch-sampled. Grade B units are also fully functional but show more visible wear.

System Liquidation has refurbished computers since 2007 and is a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher. Every refurbished laptop comes with a 1-year warranty and a 90-day battery warranty.

"We're hearing more customers ask about the environmental impact, not just the price. It's encouraging to see, because the truth is, you don't have to choose between saving money and making a more sustainable choice." How to Choose an Eco-Friendly Laptop

Every refurbished laptop avoids the same manufacturing footprint. The right one depends on how you'll use it.

• For work and long ownership: business-class lines like the Lenovo ThinkPad and Dell Latitude are built for years of daily use, which makes them a good fit for a long second life.
• For students and light use: refurbished Chromebooks cost less and handle schoolwork, browsing and video calls.
• If you don't need portability: refurbished desktop computers are easier to upgrade with more RAM or storage, which stretches their useful life further. We cover that side in eco-friendly computing with refurbished desktops.

A Trade-Off You Don't Have to Make

Most of the time, the sustainable choice costs more. Laptops are the exception. Shop reconditioned laptops and get your next machine for less, without the manufacturing footprint that comes with buying new.

FAQs About Eco-Friendly Laptops

What makes a laptop eco-friendly?

The biggest factor is how much new manufacturing it requires. Production makes up most of a laptop's lifetime carbon footprint, 71% for a 15-inch M4 MacBook Air according to Apple. Recycled materials and low power draw help, but a laptop that's already built skips that manufacturing step altogether.

What is the most eco-friendly laptop?

The one that already exists. A refurbished business laptop such as a ThinkPad or Latitude gives you a capable machine without triggering a new round of mining and manufacturing. New models marketed as eco-friendly still carry a fresh manufacturing footprint.

How much of a laptop's carbon footprint comes from manufacturing?

Manufacturers' own reports put it at roughly three quarters. Apple attributes 71% of the M4 MacBook Air's 155 kg CO2e footprint to production, and Dell attributed 78% of the Latitude E7440's footprint to manufacturing.

Is a refurbished laptop as reliable as a new one?

A Grade A refurbished laptop is fully functional, tested and repaired to the manufacturer's quality standards, and checked individually before it's listed. Business-class models are also built for heavy daily use, which suits a second life.

What warranty comes with a refurbished laptop?

Every refurbished laptop from System Liquidation includes a 1-year warranty from the original purchase date. The battery is covered for 90 days.

What should I do with my old laptop when I replace it?

Don't let it sit in a drawer or end up in the trash. Businesses, schools and other organizations can sell old or damaged equipment through our IT Asset Disposition program, which keeps it out of the waste stream.
